Classical, Modern and Contemporary design, an intro

Planning to design your home but unsure of what design style to follow?  Here is a brief introduction on Classical, Modern and Contemporary design styles and their characteristics.

Classical design; Richness.

When you hear the term Classic, you could immediately think of the word Vintage.

Think of a room where you become overwhelmed with a space that embraces great details like the carefully carved ceilings, majestic components like tall columns, big arches and domes, elements like the antique like velvety and wooden furniture and large hanging chandeliers, and the rich, strong colors.

Classical design was originated from the Greek and Roman architecture, who paid great attention to details in every single element of art and architecture which later passed on many of its elements to different empires. Later came the neoclassical design style, with less strong details and more beauty in terms of the antique identity. Neoclassical design is one of the greatest inspirations for our modern day classical interior design.

Characteristics of classicalClassical Architecture house design 3D

The first characteristic of a Classical Architecture house design 3D is symmetry, which is the most important feature. Components in this style are mirrored and reflected. This specific feature makes the design very powerful and straightforward.

The second important characteristic is the color palette used in this style. The color choice in classicism intends to invoke richness and luxury. the most common colors seen in classical interior design are gold, beige, cream, olive green, royal blue, red, brown and sand.

Another crucial feature is the power of illumination. We can notice that during the day time, the space is well lit by the brightness of the sunlight, which is penetrated through the big windows in the room whereas at night, the lights from the large chandeliers and lamps make the room as bright as it can get, and another trick that supports this illumination is the use of reflective materials such as; Glass, steel, polished stones and other materials that reflect light.

The choice of furniture in this approach we can see are mostly plush, puffed velvety textured cushions and upholstery combined by fine wood with detailed finishes, and accessories of golden, silver or shiny finish, which immediately gives a sense of grandiosity and a look of the Victorian era.

The décor elements that we can see in classical design are the carefully carved details on the ceilings and walls which are done by gypsum, the golden or silver strip lines which are combined by marble, porcelain and wood claddings on the walls, and mirrors.

Best modern house interior design; “Less is more”.

Modern design is solely based on this famous quote adopted by the German-American architect; Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.

Minimalistic architecture became a popular move in the late 80s in London and New York, as a response to the brashness of the chaos of the busy cities with higher population density and a busier urban life. So when you think about it, it does make sense, the philosophy of the minimalism in homes specifically, acts as an escape from the outside life chaos.

The components of Best modern house interior design are just as they sound. Modern and minimal. The dependency on natural light, the neutral, monochromatic palettes of color, the simple choice of materials and furniture, the plain ceilings and the clean lines.

Characteristics of modern design

If we compare the classical and modern design, we will conclude that they are exactly opposites of each other.

The most important qualities of this approach are simplicity and functionality. Modern approach features wide openings and spaces which allow free circulation of people as well as plenty of natural light and air.

The use of colors and materials here is dependent mostly on tone down bright, neutral or earthen palettes, for example, we notice the uncovered industrial ceilings, raw materials, unpainted wood, and color choice of lighter shades like Yellow, light green and such. This gives a sense of naturalness and rawness.

Another interesting emphasis is the straight horizontal and vertical lines, and less curves and waves which indicate cleanness and functionality

The choice of artificial lighting can be flexible, in terms of design, intensity and color. We will notice that in modern design, the lights are designed to be hidden and/or minimal.

Modern design features also an uncluttered space, we will see a very minimal, functional and smooth choice in furniture and materials which do not take up a lot of space, with less ornament which are also inspired or from the natural resources like wood and leather, and the study behind this concept is to lower your stress levels in comparison to the outside chaos.

Contemporary house interior design architecture; a balance:

Contemporary design is a combination of the modern or inspired by the modern minimalist design and the rich classical elements or vice versa. This particular approach creates balance between the two completely different styles but in a very harmonious manner, where a person will not feel overwhelmed with amount of details, but just satisfied with the elements in their surroundings.

This specific approach is widely preferred as it carries qualities of both old and new, less and more, rich and minimal.

Characteristics of contemporary design

Contemporary house interior design architecture stands just in between classic and modern. It is also considered the most popular approach nowadays.

Contemporary approach is sometimes mistaken for the modern design approach but if we look closely, we can tell the difference between the two.

Since this design borders on modern design, we can notice clean curved or wavy lines, as well as decluttered spaces but with a bit more ornament than the modern approach which also allows openness in the space.

The design features an accent use of color, generally in contemporary design the natural earthen palettes can be used as primary colors, which can be mixed and matched with a vibrant, pop or pastel choice of color in the items in your interior, such as the fabric in the furniture, curtains, carpet or artworks displayed in the space.

One of the most common contemporary design features is the maximized sizes of windows to achieve as much natural light as possible and the combination of simple and fancy artificial lighting such as hidden and spot lights with chandeliers and lamp lights.

In furniture and material, we notice the incorporation of the natural elements like wood, and stone and the detailed ornaments such as carvings with gypsum and claddings on walls or ceilings and the use of furniture similar to the ones we see in both the classical and modern approach.
